John Hinshaw has extensive experience leading and transforming organizations in a wide range of industries including Financial Services, Aerospace, Technology, Telecom, and Food & Beverages. He currently serves on the Board of of Sysco Foods and chairs their Corporate Governance and Nominating Committee. He also serves on the Board of Illumio, a cyber security company, where he chairs their Compensation Committee. John also serves on the board of Single Store, the world’s leading real time data platform.
John joined HSBC in London in December 2019, serving as Group Chief Operating Officer from February 2020 until September 2024. While at HSBC, John was responsible for running and transforming the bank as well as managing it through COVID. His team was 130,000 strong with an $11B budget and oversight of procuring over $15B. He was a member of the Group Executive Committee, chaired the HSBC Services Company and served on the board of HSBC’s Innovation Bank.
Before joining HSBC, John served on the Board of the Bank of New York Mellon from 2014-2019 where he chaired their Technology Committee. He served on Docusign’s board from 2014-2020 and helped take them public on the NASDAQ. He also served on the Technology Advisory Board to Bridgewater from 2018-2019.
From 2011-2015 John was Executive Vice President of Technology and Operations at Hewlett Packard (HP) and was based in Silicon Valley. When HP was split, from he served as EVP and Chief Customer Officer at Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) from 2015 to 2016 and helped take HPE pubic on the NYSE. His responsibilities included a $3B P&L for HPE’s top 30 customers.
Prior to his time with HP, John was the Global Chief Information Officer of Boeing from 2007-2010 based in Chicago and General Manager of the $3B Information Solutions business for Boeing from 2010–2011 based in Arlington, Virginia. Prior to Boeing he served at Bell Atlantic/Verizon for 14 years becoming their Chief Information Officer for Verizon Wireless from 2005-2007 based in New Jersey. John began his career as a consultant with Accenture in 1992 based in Washington DC.
Between 2012 and 2019, John served on the Board of Directors of the National Academy Foundation, which helps high-school students prepare for college and their future careers. He chaired their STEM committee.
John has made several angel investments in technology start-ups in areas such as healthcare, beverage selection, and transportation. He is a Limited Partner in Semper Virens VC Fund. He and his wife Julia are the majority owners of Blackbird Vineyards in Napa Valley, California. They have also established a charitable foundation with a focus on innovation in education, healthcare, and shelter.
John holds a Bachelor of Business Administration in computer information systems from James Madison University and is a graduate of the G100 next generation leadership programme.
In 2018, John received the prestigious St. George Award, honoring his distinguished service as an outstanding volunteer for the American Cancer Society. Having significantly grown both the Chicago Discovery Ball and San Francisco Discovery Gala, John’s leadership as a Board of Ambassador for ACS has made tremendous impact in the mission.
